Dissertation Topic: An Integrated Approach to OLAP Optimization

The goal of on-line analytical processing (OLAP) is to quickly answer queries from large amounts of data residing in a data warehouse. The recent literature in the area of improving OLAP response time has focused on materialized views as the means of achieving this goal. This problem of improving OLAP response time can be divided into four smaller sub-problems: View size estimation, selection of views to materialize, maintenance of materialized views, and query optimization with materialized views. Our goal is to contribute research to each of these areas, and integrate our work into a new cohesive OLAP system.
